Personal library of František Cardinal of Dietrichstein
Pallová, Marie ; Marek, Jindřich (advisor) ; Šípek, Richard (referee)
This bachelor thesis devoted to the library of the Moravian nobleman and church dignitary Cardinal František of Ditrichštejn. He lived from 1570 to 1536 and during his lifetime he managed to transform the small collector's library of his father Adam of Ditrichstein into a huge representative library of European size. This library included the Cardinal's personal library, of which twenty-three volumes have survived, and which today, like the rest of the Dittrichstein library, are housed in various institutions throughout Europe. In the practical part, these twenty volumes from the cardinal's private book collection are examined and analysed in terms of external and internal provenance marks. Specifically, these are personal titles that the Cardinal did not acquire from purchased or confiscated book sets, but for which he made some bibliophilic effort to acquire them for his library. Finally, the book donation and three defective adaptations , which the cardinal kept despite their shortcomings, are described.
